Colombian President Says 'I Will Resort to Weapons Once More' if American Forces Invades.

Donald Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have turned up the volume in their verbal conflict, further raising tensions in their relations after American military units targeted Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He operates drug factories and processing labs and his time is running out," Trump added.

Rising Tensions coupled with Accusations

Talking to journalists over the weekend, Trump hinted at similar armed intervention against Colombia, stating the nation faces serious problems and led by a sick man who likes making narcotics and trafficking it to America."

Although Colombia remains the leading source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the business.

A Frayed Relationship

Colombia for decades served as a key ally of the United States in the struggle against drug trafficking and received cross-party backing from American politicians, however, the relationship have worsened significantly following Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is largely controlled by criminal organizations including the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members demobilised following a landmark accord.

Petro's Strong Rebuttal

Upon being questioned whether armed intervention like that in Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump responded: "It sounds good to me personally."

The Colombian leader, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the last century, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am not illegitimate nor am I involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments uninformed. End the false accusations," he wrote in a message.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will become thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And should they arrest the president, whom many of Colombians admires and supports, they will provoke the ‘jaguar’ of the people," he admonished.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed a period in his early life participating of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed he did not participated in combat. After demobilizing, he was involved in creating the nation's constitution in 1991 subsequently becoming an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá before winning the nation's highest office.

"I pledged to abstain from using a gun ... but in defense of my country I will take up arms again," he affirmed.

Increased Security and Cross-Political Rejection

Colombia's defense chief reported that the president’s protection team had been reinforced.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with the US president, however, leaders from across Colombian politics have rejected the threats of American military action on Colombia.

Diplomatic and Economic Strains

American authorities withdrew his travel authorization following he urged American soldiers to refuse orders that violate law. In October, the US enacted asset freezes targeting Petro, his wife and various associates.

Concurrently the US was building up its forces near Venezuela and striking alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets also carried out attacks on boats in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
