The Leading Record of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Position.

Initially, this album could seem more like a challenging scholarly examination rather than the latest pop record from an artist whose previous single featured a global pop star. Broken across 4 different parts and sung in 13 tongues, we have a head-spinning orchestral-influenced album exploring female mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily transformation, often through the prism of various female saints. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded openness elsewhere—soars skyward here, buoyed by the constant presence of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among a vast roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition by itself makes the efforts of contemporary artists seem rather small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that this album succeeds in transcend overly academic chin-stroking is nothing short of miraculous, with complete praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds and the present, the scale feel far greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk more precarious. What really raises her fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of joy. Similar to the iconic artist at her peak, there is a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice that pulls you up in its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking your heart in two, the listener nevertheless want to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Example of Joy

This playful energy comes forth clearly on a stunning Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four moments. Then, everything drops silent, and there's a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo crashes down like comedic impact. The song then shifts into the frenetic track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm of Lux lies in you never quite know—or even want to predict—what it will go to next."

Almost every song finishes in a completely different place from where it started. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Another, a cut echoing her earlier rhythmic work starts out moody and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, before fluttering traditional rhythms and an angelic choir arrive to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Art and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of the album involves straddling the gap between bold innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is little coincidence that it has become the artist's highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track performed entirely in the English language swells on a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies as it spins skyward. That trick is echoed by a different powerful ballad that grows and constricts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms with its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

This album represents pop on a grand level, an ambitious reach for capital-A Art amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden gems that takes time to fully mine but never seem like hard work. While some big pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, Lux offers a lavish banquet where the characters around it, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
