Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a intense meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that arise in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.
